What is Kiwanis?
  • Organization of service- and community-minded individuals who support children and young adults around the world. Kiwanians responds to the needs of their communities and pool their resources to address worldwide issues.
  • More than 600,000 Kiwanis-family members in 94 countries
  • Motto: “We Build” ("Serving the Children of the World.")

Six Objectives of Kiwanis International

  • To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.
  • To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.
  • To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business, and professional standards.
  • To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.
  • To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communities. cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.

History of Kiwanis International

  • Formed in 1915 headquarters based in Denver, Colorado, US mission - "Young Children - Priority Young“
  • 8600 clubs worldwide with approx 300,000 members
  • First worldwide project established in 1994 partnering with UNICEF raised $75 million to fight iodine deficiency to 1.5 billion people (mainly children) in poor nations to prevent mental and physical retardation.

Organization of Kiwanis

  • Kiwanis organizations that teach community service and leadership skills to young people:
  • Elementary school - K-Kids clubs
  • Middle school/Junior High - Builders Clubs
  • High School - Key Clubs
  • University - Circle K clubs
  • Aktion Clubs: adults with mental and physical disabilities who enthusiastically perform service to help others.

Circle K

  • International Club sponsored by Kiwanis International through local Kiwanis Clubs
  • Approx. membership internationally: 11,000
  • 8 established CK Clubs in Canada with one soon to be established at Queen's University
  • Although the main focus of Kiwanis is children, the CK Clubs sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa are encouraged to plan and execute their own community service projects.  The Circle K members are invited to be involved with Kiwanis Club Ottawa projects. .
